Wine Theology: Wine Facilitates Community

30 07 2007

White Wine Toast

My “wine theology” has many facets, but one of the cornerstones is that wine facilitates community.  Some will immediately think of “drinking buddies,” the camaraderie that forms when sobriety is lost, or the fact that wine is one of the most acceptable “social” drinks.  But none of these experiences captures the deeper realities of authentic community.  One of the main reasons that I am an Oenophile is that I cherish the relationships that can be nurtured in the love, learning, and consumption of wine.

Authentic community is such a rare thing in our modern culture.  All too often we become isolated in the small spheres of our individual “worlds.”  Community is the antithesis to isolation.  Rather than “me” language, we use “we” language in authentic communities because we find ourselves inextricably connected with others.  The nature of community is that it provides a place where our true identities can be revealed without fear of rejection and that others who risk the same become part of us.  “Family of choice” is one way to describe this unique way of being connected and committed to each other.

In the simplest of terms, wine facilitates this kind of community because it becomes a starting point for conversation and offers a common ground of shared experience.  Sharing the aromas, tastes, and even language about wine can lead a group of people into deeper connection with one another.

But it’s not just about the wine.  It’s about what the culture of wine can help create – authentic community as an alternative to the prevailing individualism of our culture.
More on this later…  I cherish your thoughts!

2004 Gainey Triada

Gainey Triada

2004 Gainey TriadaCalifornia, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Wine Rating:  92 points

Uncorked: 2007.01.01

I don’t know if it was the fact that I was sipping this wine while I cooked and had it with the main course, or whether it’s just a really good wine this time, but this is exactly what Triada ought to be! Nicely balanced with ample blackberry and pomegranite flavors. Medium-bodied with a soft finish. Was perfect compliment to the apple-cranberry-walnut stuffed pork tenderloin that I cooked…

Excellent wine selection paired with excellent knowlege and service makes for an excellent wine shop — and that’s Chucks!

I’m a wine guy — about 600 bottles in our cellar.  First time I came into Chuck’s (thanks, David L. for introducing me!) I was handed a glass of red wine.  ”Can you tell what this is?”  I was able to get old world, Italy, probably Cianti.  It was.  But playing that kind of game seems to be exactly what this wine shop is about — experiencing wine.  And isn’t that what it’s all about?

Excellent wine shop!

Great wine shop. Doesn’t hurt, of course, that it shares space with Atlanta’s best cook’s shop (The Cook’s Warehouse). A fine selection of wines, many out of the price range of most wine drinkers. But here’s the good news — the affordable wines they have are worth drinking! If it’s in the store, it’s going to be good wine.

The staff is very knowledgeable. They offer help, but never get in the way.

It’s my favorite wine shop in Atlanta. They just do a great job and serve the discriminating wine drinker very well.

Here is my review from Yelp:
These guys have a decent wine selection for small-town Solon. Plus they are knowledgable and willing to assist. I wish their selection were a bit deeper in Rhones and Aussie Shiraz (well, most reds to be honest), but there is so much more here than the other options in town. A good, local wine shop for this wine guy!

Nice Cote at a great price. Slight floral hints on the nose with solid plum, blackberry, and wood aromas. Medium bodied with some cherry and currant fruit, a bit of peppery spice, and earthy hints near the finish. Moderate tannins. I’ll keep this one ready for a bowl of pasta or pizza night.

Tight nose with faint dark fruit, leather and oak. Medium bodied with luxurious mouth feel. Dark berry and cherry flavors. Firm tannins with enough strength for the fruit, but definitely not overpowering. Nicely balanced. Not particularly complex in the mouth, but very pleasant. A very good value.

Nice surprise! Deep ruby color. Had to open up a bit, but soon the nose exploded with cherries, plum, cedar and leather. Ripe cherry, strawberry, and blackberry flavors with a nice mouthfeel. The tannins are smooth. There were hints of some stems and earth on the finish, but in a quizical new-world style. Nicely balanced and very interesting. A terrific wine from southern Rhone.

Bright ruby color. Nose is very subtle with dark cherry, leather and oak. Palate is very soft with dark cherry, cranberry, and currant fruits. Tanins are soft finishing the wine with medium length. Overall a bland but very drinkable Bordeaux. 80% merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Purchased to be a comparison for other wines in a tasting. Unfortunate. Simple and uninteresting. Not offensive, but the nose was tight with young fruit. In the mouth it was juicy and tight. Berry and herb flavors. Finish was short. Drinkable, but not repeatable.

This wine just does not disappoint.  While new world in style, definitely Rhone in character.  The nose is light with fresh berries and herbs.  Fruit-forward with dark cherries and berries.  Round enough for a young wine, and needs to be enjoyed early.  Not enough in the back end to live in the bottle too long.

Yummy! Benefitted from some breathing room. Big Rhone aromas and flavors. Layered scents of dried cherries, herbs, leather, and cigar box. Very round in the mouth with big fruit — blackberries, plum with skins, and currants. A bit spicy in the middle, with mushrooms and soil flavors at the end. Very broad texture with a big, earthy finish. Tannins are firm and round. This is a keeper.

Exhuberant and elegant Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Dark ruby color. Gentle nose with clear fruit (dark cherry, blackberry, even raspberry) and leathery/smoky and cedar aromas. Explodes with layers of flavor in the mouth. Fresh cherries, plum, and sweet raspberries lead to an exquisite earthy finish with woody mushroom and dark oak flavors. Hints of light smoke and tobacco on the finish. Perfectly balanced tannins. Smooth and round feel in the mouth. A real treat to drink and a great bargain for a CDR.

Decanted for 30 minutes. Really helped. First sips were wonderful. The nose was even more intense with berries and spiciness. Cherry, dark berries, plum, and spicy herbal flavors made for lots of layers in the mouth. Balance throughout was very nice. Loved the finish with earth, mushroom, and vines. Went very well with the grilled Kenai salmon’s bold flavors.

2007.06.20 – CTS DMin Happy Hour
A little tight right out of the bottle, opened well after 30 minutes or so. Generous nose with dark berries, bell pepper and leather. Definitely an old-world style CDR with initial fruit and licorace in the mouth, followed by a long taste of the earth and vines. Plenty to chew on in this mouthful of flavors. Very round and supple. Definitely one of my favorite CDRs.

Welcome to WineMinistry

10 07 2007

I love wine.  For me, wine is ministry.  It facilitates relationships.  It’s about enjoying taste and smell, the feel of the wine in the mouth, and most of all the community of friends that gather around a good bottle.  It’s a God-thing.  This blog is a place for fellow wine ministers (and those who need ministering) to share good wines and the stories that accompany them.  Cheers!
